In May 2019 the Society received an email from 23 year old Domantas Juozapas "Joseph" Ziukas who had come across a photo album mysteriously discarded by some waste bins behind Bromley High Street. As a photographer himself, he thought it too good to just throw away and fortunately got in touch with us.
Almost none of the photos had any identifying information (with one exception of which more below), but of particular interest was that many of them had been taken by Bromley area based photographers, some better known than others.
However, in December 2023, we were contacted by Paul Sweetman who had done some further investigation based on the name of Arthur Doyle. This had led him to a family who were delighted to see Arthur’s baby picture and the later one with his parents and sister Peggy. Sadly, they did not know the names of anyone else in the earlier pictures.
Although it is regrettable we do not know who all these people were, nevertheless this glimpse of Victorians on camera, some of whom at least lived in Bromley, makes an interesting memorial to that time. Most of the photos are in the order they were in the album but a few had come loose or had never been properly inserted.
Set out below are the contents of the album. Where there was some information on the reverse, this is shown in the following scan. Just click on a picture to see a larger image; you can then move forwards or backwards using the arrows at the side.
