James Scott, surgeon of Bromley, his life and work
Linda Baldwin
James Scott of Bromley was a nationally celebrated surgeon and specialist in joint diseases and venous ulceration in the late Georgian – early Victorian period who had an enormous impact on Bromley business. Scott’s Lane is named for him, as it was adjacent to his home in Shortlands, simply known as “Scott’s House”.
The attached article describes his life and work and that of his son, John, who was also a noted doctor. It concludes with an explanation of the name Clay Hill, once the name of the road between Beckenham and Shortlands.
